A Sacred Encounter
By Danny Parada, TCGH Chaplain
I have been reading the book “Radical Loving Care” by Erie Chapman. Right up front, Chapman challenges health care leaders and staff to create a special atmosphere for patients and their families.
A particular phrase caught my attention: “sacred encounter.” I was reminded of the time Moses had an encounter with God. God told him to take off his shoes because it was a sacred place and moment. Once Moses took off his shoes, God then talked to him about how to provide “Radical Loving Care” to the Israelites.
When our patients come for a surgical procedure, some of the first things we ask them to take off are their shoes (along with everything else). What a vulnerable moment for our patients! They may be afraid, anxious, or even frustrated with what is going on in their lives.
No wonder Chapman calls these moments “sacred encounters.” These are the times for us as caregivers to talk to our patients with a “servant heart” using tender words. These are the times for us to try to understand what is going on with them physically, mentally and spiritually. These are the moments to share God’s love with them.
I agree with the author’s statement, “The fundamental relationship between caregiver and the patient can be understood as a Sacred Encounter.” I pray that each one of us would first have a “Sacred Encounter” with God Almighty so that he can change our hearts to a “Servant’s Heart” that will enable us to better share his love all around us.
